My passion for storytelling

Two goslings held by my mom
"A picture is worth a thousand words." ~Napoleon Bonaparte

For those of you who know me, you know I am a fairly quiet person. My favorite thing to do is listen. I like listening to stories from my grandparents, listening and learning from a lecture and listening and watching others interact at family gatherings (OK — I am also a bit of a people watcher too.)

Observing people, animals and nature brings me great joy, but telling the overlooked or misunderstood story is what I am most passionate about.

While in college, I found a degree in journalism to be the perfect fit. I found a career path that would allow me to watch, listen and tell other peoples' stories.

Writing is one way I can tell someone's story, but taking a photo, and letting others look at it and find their own story in it brings me even greater joy.

To me, photography isn't about taking hundreds of photos, it's about taking the one photo that makes you stop, that makes you think and that makes you smile.

What/who is a photographer?

Pho-tog-ra-pher (noun)- someone who takes photographs, especially one who practices photography professionally. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a photographer is someone who takes pictures of people, places and things and want the viewers to feel something after seeing their pictures.

Is everyone a photographer? NO.

While almost everyone has the ability to create an image through the "click of button," that does not make you a photographer. Just because you are interested in photography, that doesn't mean you should become a photographer. Just because you have a DSLR, that doesn't mean you are a photographer.

What makes you a photographer?

A photographer must have three things: passion, confidence and patience.

A photographer must be passionate.  Passion is what drives a photographer to learn more, do more and make their clients smile when they see the photos.

A photographer must be confident. Photographers need confidence in their work to continue creating beautiful images, and to help their clients trust them.

A photographer must have patience. LOTS of patience. Patience is for when you can't think of anything new to bring into your photography, and for when you feel like no one sees your passion and talent.

Passion, confidence and patience are important, and a photographer must also know their weaknesses in order to keep improving and providing their clients with quality images.

Above all, a photographer needs a support system (thank you mom and dad, my siblings, my husband and my friends for pushing me to keep going and for helping me be confident in my work)!

Who is a photographer?
A photographer is someone who is passionate about capturing moments in time of people, places and things with an intent to give their clients a photo worth hanging on the wall.

So, are you a photographer?

Reason Behind Kayde Lynn Photography Logo

Kayde Lynn Photography Logo
I created my logo in Adobe Illustrator (a program I am not very familiar with) and made my logo in part by accident.

I had picked out a typeface that I liked, played around with the location of "Kayde" and "Lynn" and decided I wanted a little something more.

I grabbed the pen tool and started drawing. Well...I tried to draw. First I drew the top wing, which is also the body of the butterfly. Then I haphazardly drew another shape and it created the second wing and head of my butterfly. While I didn't know what I wanted to draw, I ended up drawing something that means a lot to me and my photography.

So why do butterflies mean so much to me? One of my favorite photos was taken of a butterfly. I was taking a hike in Ledgeview Nature Center with my point-and-shoot camera when I saw a beautiful Monarach butterfly.

I stopped, laid down in the gravel path and lay as still as possible so I could take a photo of the butterfly landing on the milkweed plants. Thankfully no one walked by to witness it!

While the composition is not perfect, my photo of a butterfly taught me a lot. It taught me to be patient and it would pay off, it taught me that I can take beautiful photos and most of all, it taught me to be confident in my skills.

Why Photography?

Picture
As a child I loved all things nature — being outside, hiking and especially animals.

Growing up, our family spent a lot of time together outside, with one of my favorite memories being making maple syrup with my dad. One Saturday morning we headed into the woods to start the fire for boiling the maple sap, and there was a fresh snow fall glistening on the bare branches above me. I said, "I wish I had a camera." And my dad told me to take a picture with my mind. I did.

I've always been a rather quiet person, and for me, photography is my outlet. It allows me to show people how I am feeling, my creative side and most importantly, the beauty of God's creations all around us.

During my junior year of college I bought my first DSLR — a Nikon D100 — which I still use today. I didn't know much about using a DSLR, but I was determined to learn. I joined the UW Oshkosh Photography Club, shadowed a photographer and started practicing, practicing, practicing.I learn something new each day and continue to learn, and I never want to stop learning.
